WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- Two suspects were taken into custody after allegedly assaulting several women and running over two people in West Hollywood Thursday.

Authorities say the incident happened in the area of El Tovar Place and Robertson Boulevard at about 2:10 a.m. Investigators say several women were laughing at a man who appeared to be drunk. Joseph Osuna, 23, of Bakersfield allegedly began whipping the women with the buckle end of the belt.

He then jumped into the passenger seat of a car driven by Hector Hernandez, 29, of Whittier, who intentionally tried to plow into people, police said. The vehicle struck a man and a woman who were not involved in the earlier incident.

Both victims were rushed to a local hospital. The female victim was in critical condition, while her male companion was in stable condition.

Osuna and Hernandez were located a couple blocks away and taken into custody. Osuna was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and is being held in lieu of $30,000 bail. Hernandez was booked on assault with a deadly weapon and driving under the influence. He is being held in lieu of $40,000 bail.
