COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- A 37-year-old woman was fatally shot while visiting her family in Compton Christmas night. The gunman remains at large.

The shooting occurred in the 1400 block of W. 154th Street. Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies responded to a call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon around 7:30 p.m.

Detectives say a gunman walked up and fired multiple rounds into the residence.

Asha Donnell Jenkins was found dead from a gunshot wound to the torso. Detectives say Jenkins, who resides in Utah, was visiting her mother for Christmas when she was murdered.

"It's apparent that the shooting happened from outside the location due to the shell casings and we don't have any suspect information at this time," said Lt. Holly Francisco of the L.A. County Sheriff's Department.

Authorities are searching for a suspect, but no description has been given at this time. Detectives say they are stumped for clues on why someone opened fire, leaving at least half a dozen bullet holes inside the home.

Alicia Gomez says she was in the home next door when the gunfire rang out. She says she heard somewhere around six gunshots.
