Woman in 70s killed by Amtrak train in North Hollywood

NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- A woman in her 70s was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in North Hollywood Friday night, officials said.

The Pacific Surfliner train 790 struck a woman who was trying to cross the tracks one mile north of the Burbank station at 7:05 p.m.., officials said.

The location was at Vineland Avenue, just west of Bob Hope Airport.

The train had 241 passengers on board and no injuries to passengers or crew.

The woman was crossing the tracks and waited for a westbound train to pass by, then attempted to cross the tracks, according to Los Angeles Police Department detectives.

Unfortunately, she did not see another train heading in the opposite direction on the second set of tracks at the same time, according to LAPD Det. Bill Bustos.

"Unfortunately the lady, after that train went by, did not see the other train coming," Bustos said. "She proceeded to cross the railroad tracks and was impacted by the second train."

"Regrettably the victim lost her life at the scene," Bustos said. "And one of the family members was behind the victim and observed this tragic incident."

Bustos noted that the collision happened during the daytime and there appeared to be no other factors hindering visibility.
