A man who purchased a storage unit Monday in Long Island City made a gruesome discovery: at least 40 dead cats inside two freezers.

The auction was held by American Self-Storage Facility for abandon storage lockers.

The auction winner, who paid $150, went to review the locker and found dead frozen felines.

ABC sister station WABC-TV obtained exclusive cell phone video of the discovery:

During the investigation, police found at least 40 frozen cats, including one skinned cat in an aluminum tray.

Police say one freezer had frozen cats stacked on top of each other. In the other, police say they were individually wrapped in paper and plastic bags. One cat had been skinned.

Detectives said once they opened the freezers, it was like the smell of death. They even had to change their clothes due to the smell.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals took the cats for necropsies. They say that the procedures will take a few days to complete because they have to wait for the cats to thaw out.

Once the tests results come in, authorities will determine if there will be charges.

The unit was rented out in 2014 by a 66-year-old woman paying month-to-month, who stopped paying in July.
