Experts: Keep your pets indoors on July 4
Fireworks are a staple of celebrating Independence Day, but for your four-legged friends they can be a nightmare.

PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) -- Fireworks are a staple of celebrating Independence Day, but for your four-legged friends they can be a nightmare.

Elizabeth Richer Campo, senior vice president of Pasadena Humane Society, anticipates an increase in the number of runaway dogs and cats. Campo said July 5th is the Humane Society's busiest day of the year.

"We view it almost like a natural disaster. The good thing is it's predictable, so we know it's coming and we prepare," Campo said.

The Humane Society has set up extra kennels to house the influx of animals.

To prevent losing your furry friend, Campo said that dogs and cats should be kept indoors during the celebrations, especially bathrooms because they tend to be quieter. Turning on a radio or TV can also cover up any loud noises.

If your pet does go missing, the Humane Society will have extra officers on patrol Friday night, but they can only return your pet directly to your house if it has proper tags.

For dogs and cats that wind up at the shelter, their pictures will be posted online and they'll be available for pickup at 8 a.m. Saturday morning.
