Pasadena residents fired up over pet proposal
The Pasadena City Council voted to draft an ordinance requiring cats and dogs over 6 months old be spayed and neutered.

PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) -- A new strict pet proposal in Pasadena has people on both sides of the issue fired up.

The Pasadena City Council on Monday voted to draft an ordinance requiring all cats and dogs over 6 months old be spayed and neutered, with a few exemptions.

People packed council chambers to share their support or objection during a heated meeting. Testimony went on for about three and a half hours.

"There is no denying that there is a huge overpopulation crisis and the only way to end that problem is mandatory spay and neuter," said Pasadena resident Christina Cho.

Pasadena resident Josh Liddy said teaching responsible pet ownership may be a better solution.

"I think education is more key than mandating people to do this or that," said Liddy.

The city attorney's office will come back with the proposed ordinance within 60 days.
