DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Thousands of people hit the pavement in downtown Los Angeles on Sunday for the annual Walk to Defeat ALS.

The Ice Bucket Challenge put the disease in the social media spotlight this summer.

"The Ice Bucket Challenge has made an incredible difference in ALS awareness and of course has raised an unprecedented amount of money for ALS research," said Fred Fisher, President of the ALS Association Golden West Chapter.

Several celebrities were at the event, including Renee Zellweger and Reese Witherspoon. Both were part of Team Nanci, in honor of Hollywood publicist Nancy Ryder, who was recently diagnosed with ALS.

"Until Nanci, I really didn't know anything about ALS," Witherspoon said. "This has been a real educational opportunity to see how few medicines there are, how little is out there to help Nanci with this devastating disease."
