LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- For nearly six years, Nate Arenas has been volunteering at the Fred Jordan Mission in Downtown Los Angeles.

"It's been great," said Arenas. "I have a blast out here and it's awesome giving back."

We caught up with Arenas while he was handing out toys and food to families during the mission's annual Christmas Toy Party on December 16th.

This Freshman at Martin Luther King High School says it's all about serving others, and is also a reminder to never take anything for granted.

"We give them Christmas presents. We give them things that they want; clothes, food, and it's awesome," said Arenas. "It's something so small to us, and it's something so big for them."

Arenas also volunteers at the Fred Jordan Mission during Easter, for back to school events, and he helps prepare Thanksgiving meals.

"He comes down with his mom and dad, comes down with his friends, and literally serves." said Tom Jordan, Executive Vice President of Fred Jordan Missions.

Arenas says seeing other kids smile and hearing "thank you" is the best gift in return. He wants to continue to serve after graduating high school as well.

"I've always wanted to be a detective, because my dad was," said Arenas. "That's something I've always wanted to do and protect other people."
