PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) -- About 55,000 people gathered at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena Saturday to walk for those who struggle with autism.

Team JuJu Power was proud to show its color and support.

"I'm just thankful and excited that we're all here with the same struggles every day, and it's good to have support," said Denise Cisneros, whose daughter was born with autism.

The 13th annual "Walk Now for Autism Speaks" event kicked off at 9 a.m. The walk benefits autism research and programs to raise awareness. Last year, $1.9 million was raised, and this year the goal was to raise $2 million.

"It's a great opportunity to see what's going on in the community, to see what resources are out there," said Matthew Asner, Autism Speaks' Executive Director for Southern California.

"We just really want the families to have an amazing time and come together for the mission of Autism Speaks," said Jennifer Jones.

ABC7 sponsored the event. Eyewitness News anchor Marc Brown and Michelle Tuzee signed autographs and Eyewitness News anchor Phillip Palmer served as the emcee at the event.

Two-year-old Demi Contreas' family turned out to support her.

"My daughter was diagnosed in December. It was tough and just looking around it's pretty awesome knowing that we got all of that support," said James Contreas, Demi's father, in tears.

Autism now affects 1 in 68 children.

"I just hope she grows up with that family support knowing that if ever I'm not around or her mom is not around that she still has that support," Contreas said.
