Giant Santa Monica Pier mural celebrates art, supports good cause

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (KABC) -- RoseArt teamed up with the Boys & Girls Club of America to create a giant mural at the Santa Monica Pier on Tuesday - all in the name of fun and creativity.

It took more than 2,000 pounds of chalk-paint and 360 man hours to create the mural, which spans approximately 40,000 square feet. It is billed as the largest mural in Santa Monica Pier's history.

The football field-sized mural is not out to break any records - the point is to celebrate art and creativity.

"It's all about summer, getting outside, getting outdoors, having fun, being creative," said Shantelle Taylor with RoseArt.

Not only is it visual, the mural is also interactive. It has seven different play areas with everything from hopscotch to human checkers.

RoseArt, which supplied all the chalk-paint used to create the mural, is partnering with the Boys & Girls Club of America by donating $50,000 to support the club's national art programs.

"Four-thousand communities across the country, Boys & Girls Clubs help fill gaps for kids that need us most, for kids and teens that don't have anywhere else to go and need positive mentorship," said Tim Hogan with the Boys & Girls Club of America.

Hogan says the money will make a big difference.

"That investment really allows us to push something that's incredibly important to us, which is art and creativity and the opportunity to allow our kids to express themselves," Hogan said.

The donation is set to be presented by actress Beverley Mitchell, known for her role as Lucy in "7th Heaven."

Everyone is encouraged to come to the pier and participate in the mural before it is taken down.
