"We were out on a boat trip and when we got in the water's pretty shallow," McCathie told CTV News. "I was trying to lock the boat up. It was a very sunny day, there was one big white cloud in the sky and the lightning bolt comes through the tree [and] hits me."

The lottery winner isn't the only one to have been struck by lightning in his family. McCathie's daughter was stuck by lightning years ago when working as a wilderness guide in Manitoba.

Sophie Leger, a mathematics professor at the Universite de Moncton, said the probability of McCathie's lottery win and his family's unfortunate incidents with lightning was one in 2.6 trillion.

McCathie says that he is going to use his winnings to pay off some debt and may also go on a second honeymoon with his wife to Ecuador to celebrate the couple's 30th anniversary, according to a press release from the Atlantic Lottery.
