ABC7 Pay It Forward: Single mom of 4 wins $10K Mathis Brothers giveaway

WEST COVINA Calif. (KABC) -- A West Covina mother of four struggling after a devastating house fire is the winner of the $10,000 Mathis Brothers living room giveaway.

Co-worker Laura Silva nominated Meaylen Rodriguez for the giveaway. Rodriguez is a single mother, caring for four kids including one with special needs.

On Halloween, Rodriguez's car was hit by a drunk driver. Two days later, a fire burned down her house and all of her furniture. Silva said she and her co-workers wanted to pay it forward to help Rodriguez get her life back.

"I hope that some stability and some security could be brought to the family before the holidays," Silva said in her nomination video.

After the fire, the only furniture left in Rodriguez's home were some folding chairs, a folding table and an air mattress.

After learning she was the winner, Rodriguez burst into tears and she was very surprised and grateful.

"You do good and good things come. Even if it's the darkest time, good things come and you have people showing those flash lights throughout that darkness," Rodriguez said.

She said she wants to continue the spirit of giving.

"As soon as we get off from our feet, we're going to go ahead and pay it forward," she said.
