DESCANSO GARDENS - THE RISE OF THE JACK-O'-LANTERNS

The Rise is on at Descanso Gardens in La Canada Flintridge through November 2. Get more information on the exhibit at www.descansogardens.org and get tickets online at www.therise.org.

Here are some tips from the master carvers at The Rise when carving your jack-o'-lanterns at home:

- First, find a pumpkin with a longer stem that is green. The wider the stem, the thicker the pumpkin's skin.

- You can keep your jack-o'-lantern alive longer without mold by spraying it with an antibacterial spray, or by using a mild bleach solution to soak the pumpkin. Another way to do it is to treat it like potter's clay, take a wet towel with a little antibacterial solution on it and leave it overnight to keep the pumpkin hydrated.
