LA Galaxy's Giovani dos Santos wins top MLS player at Univision awards

Giovani dos Santos received theMLS Player of the Year Award at thePremios Univision Deportes on Sunday night.

Dos Santos earned the nod over fellow candidates David Villa of New York City FC -- the winner of the league's Most Valuable Player award -- and Toronto FC's Sebastian Giovinco.

The 27-year-old scored 14 goals and added 12 assists in 28 regular-season games for the Galaxy in 2016.

Also a finalist for top Mexico national team player and goal of the year, Dos Santos was the most nominated athlete at the star-studded ceremony.

Javier Hernandez received the honor for El Tri, while the top goal went to Pachuca's Jonathan Urretaviscaya for his 80-yard run against Chivas.

Necaxa forward Edson Puch was named the top player in Liga MX, while Chile won the award for best team after this summer's Copa America triumph.
