Suspect arrested for attempted sexual assault in Van Nuys
Police have arrested a man suspected of trying to sexually assault a woman who was walking home in Van Nuys in August.

VAN NUYS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Police have arrested an Arleta man suspected of trying to sexually assault a woman who was walking home in Van Nuys in August.

Los Angeles Police Department officers arrested Antonio Reyes, 27, of Arleta, on Tuesday at his place of work after a nearly monthlong investigation into the alleged attempted rape.

The incident happened around 5:45 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, in the 14400 block of Vanowen Street. Authorities said the victim, who is in her 30s, was near her apartment when a man stepped out in front of her, attempting to engage in a conversation.

The man then suddenly tried to grab the victim.

"He's attempting to remove her clothing. He's able to get both her pants and her underwear down toward her hip area," Detective Eric Rose said.

She resisted as the suspect attempted to take his pants off. The woman and suspect ended up wrestling to the ground and she eventually got free.

The suspect fled the scene after she was able to get away.

Authorities said the victim was screaming and yelling "fire" during the assault, trying to get someone's attention. Cars were seen driving by as she struggled with the suspect.

The victim spoke out Tuesday about the attack and her relief that an arrest was made.

"I hope that I will find closure by having this guy testify and we'll find a motive," said the woman, whom ABC7 is not identifying. "Because if anything I'd like to understand what happened that day."

Police said a combination of tips from the public, reviewing video surveillance and old-fashioned detective work led them to identify Reyes as the suspect.

Authorities hope any other possible victims will come forward and contact the police department.
