Suspected DUI driver faces felony charges for bizarre LA chase

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A high-speed chase left behind damaged cars, including a police cruiser, as a suspected DUI driver tried to flee from authorities.

One of those people, Francisco Escalante, was T-boned during the frantic chase. The husband and father thought it was all over when he was hit Thursday night.

"She needed to stop. She needed to stop, but she didn't stop," he said.

The chase suspect, who was a woman, made her biggest gamble when she was blocked by police cruisers while in a cul-de-sac. She tried to ram through the cruisers despite her vehicle being considered a deadly weapon. In similar situations, officers have killed drivers who did not comply.

"Officers have an obligation to intervene and they did that in a way that used the minimum amount of force so I'm proud of them," Chief Charlie Beck said.

Officers used a Tazer and eventually she was taken down. She tried fighting with officers, but was later loaded into an ambulance.

Her recklessness was costly to innocent victims, who now have hospital and car repair bills because she wouldn't pull over.

Authorities did not release the woman's name yet because of the investigation but she faces multiple felonies, including assault on a police officer.
