LAX adds Apple Maps feature to navigate terminals

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- An estimated 4.35 million travelers will pass through LAX this holiday season. That translates to long lines, heavy traffic and too much time inside airport terminals.

But what if you could map out your terminal visit before you arrive and while you're at LAX? Now, you can.

"Using open data from the city of Los Angeles, Apple Maps now has interactive features to help travelers on each part of their journey," said Justin Erbacci, Chief Innovation and Technology Officer at LAX.

If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can open Apple Maps, click on "look inside," and you'll find a list and the interactive location of every restaurant, store, restroom and gate inside each of LAX's nine terminals.

"Before I got here, I was looking online because I wanted a directory of the duty-free shops and restaurants and I was having a really hard time finding the information I wanted. This clearly is a lot more useful and efficient so I think it's fabulous," said Lisa Ashworth-McMullen, who was flying out of LAX Tuesday.

Arrows on information boards can't guide you to where you want to go and they also don't provide a link to Yelp reviews of all airport businesses. Indoor maps does all that.

LAX says this partnership, which is available at 34 airports around the world, will encourage travelers to arrive early this holiday season.

"From automatic screening lanes, to mobile passport control, to improved wifi speeds and new mobile websites, we're working to use innovation to help travelers as they get to and through LAX," said Erbacci.
