CORONA, Calif. (KABC) -- As part of an ongoing construction project, the 91 Freeway will close in both directions between the 71 and 15 freeways in Corona starting Friday night, an event dubbed "Coronageddon."

The freeway will be closed for 55 hours as crews demolish the Maple Street Bridge and install support beams for a new ramp and fly-over bridge. It is all part of the Riverside County Transportation Commission's freeway expansion project.

"We are conducting the full weekend closure for safety, efficiency and reduced impacts to the traveling public," said Anne Mayer, executive director for the commission.

During the closure, Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol will do their part to keep drivers moving, such as providing detour routes. But officials warn drivers to steer clear of the area or they can expect long delays.

But for anyone who has to get around this weekend, they can always hop on the bus or take Metrolink.

The freeway is set to reopen early Monday morning.
