RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) -- A pedestrian was hospitalized in grave condition after being struck in traffic in Riverside Monday afternoon.

Riverside police and fire personnel responded to a traffic collision involving a single vehicle and a pedestrian on the 7300 block of Indiana Avenue, according to the Riverside Police Dept.

The pedestrian reportedly walked off the south curb into the street across Indiana. A westbound-traveling vehicle struck the pedestrian when another vehicle ahead veered out of the way to avoid the pedestrian.

The driver was unable to stop, police said, and struck the pedestrian in the number two lane.

The driver stayed on scene to cooperate with the investigation.

The pedestrian was transported to Riverside Community Hospital and was listed in grave condition Monday night.
