CORONA, Calif. (KABC) -- Lane closures on the westbound 91 Freeway through Corona due to storm damage caused gridlock traffic on Wednesday.

Two far right lanes were shut down Tuesday near the Green River Road on-ramps after rain water eroded the road bed.

Crews worked around the clock to replace a part of the damaged road. Fortunately, the soil underneath the road is solid, so crews put down pavement material over it. Workers will use rapidly setting concrete to speed up the process.

The construction only adds to the already congested route. Motorists were advised to take the 60 or 10 freeways as alternates to get around the bottleneck.

The Riverside County Transportation Commission urged commuters to carpool, take public transportation or avoid the area completely until the repairs are finished.

Lanes were expected to reopen by Thursday morning.

About 280,000 commuters use that stretch of the 91 Freeway every day. That area has also been under construction since July 2014.
