Tanker spills nearly 1,800 gallons of diesel fuel in 5 Fwy crash near Atwater Village

ATWATER VILLAGE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A fuel tanker spilled almost 1,800 gallons of diesel fuel onto the northbound 5 Freeway near Atwater Village after it overturned Tuesday night.

Authorities said the tanker overturned around 11:20 p.m. near the Glendale Boulevard off-ramp. The driver suffered minor injuries and did not need to be hospitalized, authorities said.

The tank, which was carrying 1,800 gallons of fuel, was punctured during the crash. Authorities said almost all of the fuel leaked out onto the freeway.

Los Angeles Fire Department crews worked with the CHP and the truck owner to coordinate a private vacuum truck to transfer the contents as well as a tow for the truck, Brian Humphrey of LAFD said.

The crash caused all lanes on the northbound side of the freeway to be shut down until shortly after 4 a.m. Wednesday. Two right lanes remained closed as crews cleaned up the spill. Remaining lanes were reopened at about 9 a.m.

It was unclear how the big rig overturned or if other cars were involved in the crash.
