LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Record-breaking heat and Santa Ana winds continue this weekend across Southern California.
Temperatures are expected to reach the lower-90s for Los Angeles and Orange counties, valleys and Inland Empire areas. Beaches will hit a comfortable mid-80s.
The heat wave is expected to drive about 750,000 to 1 million people to the coast between Zuma and Redondo beaches.
More lifeguard towers than usual for this time of year are expected to be open amid sweltering temperatures and the Spring Break season.
Meanwhile, L.A. Marathon organizers plan to begin the Sunday race 30 minutes earlier in anticipation of the heat. Extra cooling stations will also be set up along the route.
"This is certainly hotter than I expected coming out here, but I'm going to slow my pace down, hydrate throughout the race, hydrate throughout today, wear lightweight clothing and do the best I can," said Michael Meister, a marathon runner from Miami.
The public is urged to avoid heat stroke by participating in outdoor activities in the morning or evening, wearing light clothing and drinking plenty of water.
A slight cool down is expected to kick off Sunday.
