Series of small earthquakes hit Santa Clarita area

A series of small earthquakes, the largest a magnitude 3.1, hit the Santa Clarita area Saturday morning.

The earthquakes were centered approximately four miles south-southwest of Newhall.

The U.S. Geological Survey says six quakes, most around magnitude 1 and 2, started at 7:45 a.m. A 2.8-magnitude earthquake struck at 7:52 a.m., and then a 3.1-magnitude quake hit two minutes later.

Residents in Granada Hills, Santa Clarita, Van Nuys, Canyon Country, Northridge, Reseda, Chatsworth and Stevenson Ranch reported feeling shaking from the earthquakes.

The 3.1-magnitude earthquake had a depth of 4.6 miles.

The Los Angeles Fire Department surveyed the greater L.A. area, and no significant damage was reported.
