VIDEO: Massive haboob sweeps through Phoenix
A massive haboob swept through Phoenix.

PHOENIX (KABC) -- A massive haboob rolled across the Phoenix area Sunday evening.

Video shot by ABC affiliate KNXV in Phoenix captured the enormous dust cloud consuming the sky.

A haboob is a giant wall of dust accompanied by high winds from a collapsing thunderstorm.

The phenomenon is common in Phoenix during the summer months and will typically pop up without warning.

Haboobs can stretch for miles and last for several hours with visibility near zero.

The term haboob comes from the Arabic word habb, meaning "to blow," according to the American Meteorological Society's glossary of meteorology.
