A gunman was being sought Saturday after he broke into a Rancho Cucamonga home and shot a 71-year-old resident in the chest, resulting in her hospitalization, authorities said.

The incident was reported shortly after 4 a.m. at a house in the 7100 block of San Carmela Court, according to the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department. Deputies found the wounded victim, conscious and breathing, inside the home.

"The victim told deputies she was awoken by the sound of shattered glass," the sheriff's department said in a statement. "When she examined the cause, she was confronted by an intruder."

According to investigators, the man fired one round and then fled on foot. He is described as black, about 5'8" tall, with a thin build and a dark-colored scarf over his face.

The victim was listed in stable condition at a hospital.
