A sheriff's deputy was shot and wounded Tuesday in a confrontation with a suspect in Hesperia, officials said.

HESPERIA, Calif. (KABC) -- A sheriff's deputy was shot and wounded Tuesday in a confrontation with a suspect in Hesperia, officials said.

The suspect was taken into custody and the San Bernardino County deputy was transported to a local hospital.

The incident happened Tuesday afternoon in the parking lot of a shopping center near Bear Valley Road and Jacaranda Avenue. The public was asked to avoid the area.

Officials say it started as a report of a suspect possibly casing a storage facility. When deputies responded there was a struggle and the deputy was shot in the arm in the parking lot of the shopping center.

The suspect fled in a pickup truck but was spotted a few minutes later on Apple Valley Road. Deputies gave chase and exchanged fire with the suspect, then were able to take the person into custody.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said the deputy is out of surgery, and is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

The condition of the suspect is unknown.
