LONG BEACH, Calif. -- An armed man is dead following a police chase in Long Beach on Thursday.

The California High Patrol said officers attempted to pull the man over for being in the carpool lane without having a passenger.

That's when police said the man led them on a pursuit.

The man crashed then fled on foot near South Street and Cherry Avenue.

The suspect shot at a motorcycle officer who took cover by crouching next to his bike, police said.

The man then ran about a quarter mile onto railroad tracks and that's where police said they found him with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head.

Police said officers did not fire at the suspect.
