Cal State San Bernardino police warn students of man posing as resident assistant

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) -- California State University, San Bernardino officials are warning students about a man posing as a school official trying to enter university apartments.

University police said there were two reported incidents involving apartments of female residents. In both cases, the suspect knocked on the door, identified himself as a resident assistant and said he needed to get inside to do repair work.

In both incidents, authorities described the suspect as a tall black adult male with short, curly hair. He was last seen wearing dark colored shorts and a plaid red short-sleeve shirt.

Warning signs have been posted on campus, and police have also stepped up patrols. Students say they're definitely on alert.

"I work around the corner so I'm constantly walking around this neighborhood so I do definitely carry pepper spray and a stun gun with me. I'm just extra precautions now," said student Victoria Wyatt.

Police advise students to walk in groups or call the campus police escort service at (909) 537-5165 to walk with them to their cars or campus housing.

Officers are also reminding students that all resident assistants are required to wear a metal name badge.
