1 ton of turkey served on LA's Skid Row by Fred Jordan Mission

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Thousands of those in need on Los Angeles' Skid Row were treated to a Thanksgiving meal from the Fred Jordan Mission on Thursday.

Hundreds of volunteers cooked up more than one ton of turkey, along with all of the traditional sides during the annual Thanksgiving banquet.

People in attendance were treated to music, food and fellowship.

"It makes me feel good because I used to be homeless," said Joe West.

Jimmy Hearon enjoyed the holiday meal while reflecting on the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday.

"It's just a special day and everybody should just be thankful for being alive and the things they've accomplished," Hearon said.

Since 1944, the Fred Jordan Mission has been giving to those in need for Thanksgiving.

"It was just an opportunity for my wife and I to come out as a family and just give back to the community," volunteer Robert Odell said. "It's awesome."

"It makes you thankful for what you have and makes up humble," volunteer Kaliki Odell said.

Former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has been coming out to serve people for years during the holidays.

"It's important that we understand we have an obligation to one another and it's great to see so many volunteers and to see you all out here," Villaraigosa said.
