NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A homicide investigation is underway after a woman was found dead at a business complex in Newport Beach early Tuesday, police said.

Authorities made the discovery after a concerned man called 911 saying he needed help finding his missing friend.

"They were able to reach her on her phone and then that contact stopped. They were concerned for her welfare when they weren't able to reach her," Newport Beach police spokeswoman Jennifer Manzella said.

The man directed police to Newport Corporate Plaza in the 5000 block of Campus Drive at about 12:30 a.m.

The Orange County Coroner's office confirmed the body was found inside a business called Coast to Coast Copy.

"We are investigating the case as a homicide," Newport Beach police Sgt. T. McKenzie said. "We are not sure how she died. We will let the coroner investigate that."

The woman's identity has not been released but she's believed to be between 20 and 25 years old. Police said she had no obvious signs of trauma.

The man who called 911 and requested a welfare check is cooperating with police and is not considered a suspect at this time.

Newport Beach police Deputy Chief David McGill said he believes this is an isolated incident. It's unclear if the victim worked in the plaza.

"As to what is her connection to this building, we're still working to establish that, as well," Manzella said.

Detectives are searching for a white van seen in the area, but investigators have released no further suspect information.

A crime scene investigator climbed down into a manhole to search for potential evidence after a disposable glove was found near it.

The scene was unsettling for people who work in the area.

"It's odd and unfortunate," said Mag of Newport Beach. "It's sad, actually, to hear this. I don't know what to say... prayer goes out to her family."

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information was asked to contact the Newport Beach Police Department.
