101 Freeway to close during demolition of 6th Street Viaduct in DTLA

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The 101 Freeway will be closed for 40 hours through downtown Los Angeles in early February for the demolition of the deteriorating 6th Street Viaduct, city officials said Friday.

The 84-year-old structure suffers from a chemical deterioration of the bridge's concrete and needs to be replaced.

A 2.5-mile stretch of the 101 Freeway will be closed from the 10 and 101 freeway interchange just south of Downtown. In addition, drivers traveling west on the 60 Freeway from the Pomona area will not be able to access the 101 Freeway.

The closure is expected to begin on Friday, Feb. 5 at 10 p.m. Drivers were warned to expect delays and to follow detours to alternate routes.

Construction of the new viaduct will be completed in late 2019.
