ONTARIO, Calif. (KABC) -- A street race in Ontario turned deadly for one driver when he lost control of his vehicle and smashed into a tree, police said.

The incident began when two drivers who knew each other were racing Wednesday afternoon on Cedar Street.

The driver of a silver BMW lost control of his car, flipped over and hit a tree near Archibald Avenue, police said.

Firefighters pulled him from the vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The second driver returned to the crash scene and was cooperating with investigators.

Investigators said there was no indication that the two vehicles hit each other during the race.
