PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) -- A San Marino High School football player was killed after losing control of his vehicle and crashing into a light pole near the Rose Bowl in Pasadena early Sunday.

Coroner's officials identified the victim Monday as 17-year-old Brendan Sumner Leon.

Pasadena police say Brendan lost control of a silver 2002 BMW 330i near West Drive and Seco Street and struck a light pole. He was the only person in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The San Marino Football team offered their condolences to Brendan's family on Twitter and called him "one of our own."

"The nicest kid. A great teammate. A tragic loss too early. Prayers for his family & friends. One of our own. #RIP," the tweet said.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

Anyone with information on this incident was asked to contact Pasadena police Lt. Pete Hettema at (626) 744-7159.
