Cyclist killed in hit-run crash as domestic violence suspect fled from deputies in Loma Linda
LOMA LINDA, Calif. (KABC) -- A bicyclist was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash as a domestic violence suspect fled from police in Loma Linda Friday morning.
San Bernardino County sheriff's detectives from the Rancho Cucamonga Station tried serving a warrant for the arrest of a domestic violence suspect in the 11000 block of Benton Court around 10:48 a.m.
The suspect, identified as 37-year-old Eric Tafoya, was then believed to be at a relative's home in the area of Benton Court and Anderson Road. When deputies arrived, they saw Tafoya exiting the house and leaving in his car.
Authorities attempted a traffic stop, but Tafoya failed to yield and tried fleeing the scene. As he was traveling westbound on Barton Road, he crashed into a cyclist and continued driving, authorities said. He then crashed into a van, exited the vehicle and fled on foot.
With the help of a K-9, Tafoya was found hiding in a shed in the neighborhood. He was taken into custody.
Authorities said the bicyclist, identified as Redlands resident Randolph Stephenson, 62, suffered major injuries in the crash and was taken to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Tafoya was booked at the West Valley Detention Center for an active warrant and on suspicion of murder.
