WILMINGTON, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect is in critical condition after being shot during an officer-involved shooting in Wilmington Friday morning.

Long Beach Police Department detectives were investigating the Sept. 5 shooting death of a man and were set to make an arrest. They headed to the 1700 block of North Main Avenue around 11:20 a.m., according to police.

When officers arrived, they attempted to arrest a suspect they said was armed and dangerous. Authorities said he attempted to flee the scene in a car and crashed into a detective's vehicle, which resulted in an officer-involved shooting.

Authorities said the suspect was struck and taken to a local hospital in critical condition. They said a loaded gun and an additional magazine were recovered at the scene.

The two officers who were involved were not injured in the shooting.

The suspect underwent surgery, and his family told Eyewitness News that the man is a victim in the case, but would not elaborate further.

The investigation into the shooting death of a man happened last month in the Hanjin shipping center in Long Beach.

The investigation was ongoing.
