COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- A man suffered a broken leg early Wednesday morning after he allegedly used an ax to break into a business in Compton and then fell from the roof, authorities said.

The incident was reported at about 1 a.m. in the area of Rosecrans and Wilmington avenues, according to a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Firefighter-paramedics responded to the location, where the man was lying on the ground as he received first-aid treatment.

He was then transported to a nearby hospital in unknown condition, the Sheriff's Department said.

A sheriff's deputy was seen on the roof, holding the ax that was apparently used in the incident.

It was unclear why the man attempted to break into the building.
