Automated TSA checkpoint at LAX set up for holiday travel season

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A record number of Southern California residents are expected to travel by air for Thanksgiving, and a new automated TSA checkpoint has been set up to speed up wait times.

According to airport officials, an estimated 2.3 million travelers will be flying in and out of LAX for the Thanksgiving holiday. The number is an 8 percent increase from 2015.

Terminal 7 may help ease the stress for many after a new automated checkpoint system was installed. With it, five travelers at a time are able to go through security.

Early reviews on the system are positive, with people calling it smooth and efficient.

Despite the change, airport officials still urge travelers to get to LAX two hours for domestic flights and even earlier for international flights.

SoCal residents can also expect 100,000 vehicles to be dropping off and picking up passengers every day over the next six days.

Police urge those waiting to pick someone up to use the cellphone parking lot area, which offers free parking for two hours.

Service dogs will also be making appearances at LAX to help reduce the stress level of passengers traveling over the holiday season.
