Several struck by test car outside LA Convention Center, LAFD says

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Several people were struck by a test car outside the Los Angeles Convention Center in downtown L.A. on Monday, fire officials said.

A total of seven people were treated for non-life threatening injuries following the incident, which occurred at 1201 S Figueroa St, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The injured were transported to area hospitals -- five pedestrians and the driver and passenger of the solo car involved, which was an electrical model by Fiat.

Officials said the seven individuals hospitalized were not seriously hurt, though their specific conditions were not immediately clear.

"He made a turn and he rammed through the barriers and hit some people down below, and they just went flying in the air. And there was this one guy and he was lying right in front of the car, and I think he got seriously injured 'cause he was going really fast around that turn," said witness Miles Fourtico.

Authorities from the LAPD said the driver in the Fiat was taking a test drive in a designated area for the L.A. Auto Show, which was ongoing at the Convention Center.

"In the process of conducting that test drive, that individual lost control of the vehicle, which jumped the curb and crashed into a...tree pot right by the standard there," said Lt. Chris Ramirez of the LAPD.

An investigation was underway to try and determine if the crash was an accident or intentional and if the driver was impaired.
