2nd-alarm brush fire briefly threatens structures in Malibu

MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) -- A small brush fire erupted in Malibu, briefly threatening structures on Thursday.

The blaze ignited around 8:30 a.m. in the 5300 block of Horizon Drive.

Around 200 L.A. County firefighters were assigned to tackle the blaze. They made quick work of the blaze and stopped the forward spread of the fire.

Ground crews then spent a couple hours putting out any hot spots.

No structures were damaged.

Jerry Meehan, an area resident and also a retired firefighter, told Eyewitness News that the fire was caused by downed power lines.

"I told my wife that we have a brush fire, and about a minute later, she's standing there at the window and she says, 'I see smoke.' So I called 911 and both of us went up on the hill with garden hoses to help save the neighbor's property and our property," Meehan said.

Meehan and other residents said they were grateful for the firefighters' quick response.

The fire comes amid five other blazes burning across Southern California.
