Woman fatally shot near elementary school in Boyle Heights, police say

BOYLE HEIGHTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A woman was fatally shot and found with multiple gunshot wounds Wednesday morning in Boyle Heights, police said.

Los Angeles police responded to the shooting at about 4:54 a.m. The victim in the shooting has not been identified.

The shooting occurred near Sunrise Elementary, close to the intersection of Euclid and Whittier Boulevard. Kids and parents were forced to walk right by the crime scene on their way to school.

Los Angeles school police were on scene assisting students safely to school.

"Our main focus is for the children to make sure they don't see things like this," Sgt. Miguel Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department said. "They can see it on TV, that's fine, but when you see it live, that's different."

"They saw the tent, and they asked what was inside," Melinda Rodriguez, who lives on the street, said. "We just had to say there was a lady inside, but it's hard for them to understand that concept."

Rodriguez said nobody seems to know who the victim is.

"It shows how unaware we are of who's in our community and who's on our street," Rodriguez said.

Police said the woman still had her purse, cash and car keys, so they don't believe it was a robbery or gang-related.

No suspect information was available. An investigation is underway.

LAPD is asking anyone with information about the crime to contact the department's Hollenbeck division.
