SUN VALLEY, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Three students and two adults were injured and taken to a hospital after being shot by a BB gun at Sun Valley High School Friday afternoon.

Authorities responded to the school, located in the 9100 block of North Telfair Avenue, around 3:29 p.m. on reports of a shooting.

It was later determined a pellet gun or BB gun was used and five people suffered injuries. They were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation.

A woman whose husband was hit by one of the pellets said he was walking their 2-year-old son when he was shot on his side. She said he went home believing the injury wasn't that bad, but she noticed it was still lodged inside him.

She urged her husband to go back to speak with the police and he was then transported to the hospital for his injury.

Authorities believe the shots were fired from an apartment complex near the school, but a search did not yield any suspects. The suspect remained on the loose.

It was unclear what led to the shooting.

The investigation was ongoing.
