SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect who broke the windshield of a sheriff's patrol unit with the radio he grabbed from a deputy is dead after a deputy-involved shooting in Santa Clarita Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on the 25200 block of Rye Canyon Road after deputies responded to a call of a suspicious person in the area, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Lt. Brandon Dean said the suspect grabbed the responding deputy's radio and stun gun, starting swinging around the radio and broke the windshield of the deputy's car.

The suspect then tried to hide and grabbed a large wooden stake, Dean said. That's when deputies opened fire, shooting the suspect twice in the upper torso. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

One deputy suffered minor injuries but details on their condition were not immediately available.

It's unclear what the suspect was doing in the area, authorities said.
