SOUTH GATE, Calif. (KABC) -- A suspect was killed following an officer-involved shooting near Capistrano and Seminole avenues in South Gate Wednesday night.

The South Gate Police Department received a call about two suspects who were possibly trying to steal a car in the 10400 block of Pescadero Avenue at 8:50 p.m. When officers arrived, they detained a person who fit the description of one of the suspects.

As they were questioning him, a 25-year-old man drove an older model Toyota Camry toward the officers at a high rate of speed.

Officers opened fire, and then the suspect put the car into reverse and backed up onto the front lawn of a home before coming to a stop.

The suspect was declared dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

Authorities later confirmed that the vehicle the suspect was driving was the stolen car. The person who was detained did not appear to be involved and was released.

The investigation is ongoing.
