MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- Our ABC7 Cool Kid for Thursday, April 23, is Megan Forbes, who started an organization that encourages cancer patients not to wear wigs as a form of empowerment.

Megan is passionate about her mission because two of her grandparents died of cancer. She was inspired by her grandmother, Donna, to create "Gone with the Wigs."

She feels that encouraging patients not to wear a wig can be beneficial.

"A lot of people will see the cancer patient wearing no wig and not think of it as a negative thing but think of it as a positive thing and then that will trigger the thought of, 'How can I help? What do I do?'" she said.

Her group would like to organize a national day where patients remove their wigs and supporters have their heads shaved or wear bald caps in solidarity. But "Gone with the Wigs" also hopes to do more than that.

"We are hoping to donate money to a cancer wellness center. We are either going to support or create one in the South Bay to help cancer patients do alternative treatments, holistic therapy," she said.

Megan said losing her grandparents was devastating for her, but she was able to turn her sadness into a positive outcome by helping to empower patients so they can face their battles with strength.
