INDUSTRY, Calif. (KABC) -- A Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy shot and wounded a man who then allegedly took a woman hostage early Thursday morning in the City of Industry, authorities said.

The incident began about 3:20 a.m. when the deputy, who was inside a 7-Eleven in the 2600 Block of Pellissier Place, heard a car crash outside the convenience store.

A man and woman were arguing near the crashed car, a spokesperson for the L.A. County Sheriff's Department said.

The man reportedly struck the woman, who then fled from the scene. When the deputy approached the scene to investigate, the man allegedly came at him and reached for the deputy's gun.

"The suspect attacked the deputy. There was an altercation in that the suspect attempted to grab the deputy's firearm, and it was at that point that a deputy-involved shooting occurred," said Lt. Scott Hoglund.

The deputy drew the firearm and fired three shots, striking the man in the lower extremities, authorities said, after which the man fled into the 7-Eleven. Once inside, he briefly took a female employee hostage before he was taken into custody, the Sheriff's Department said.

The suspect was transported to a hospital in unknown condition. His name was not immediately released. No other injuries were reported.

The suspect could face several charges.

"Assault on a deputy, there may have been a domestic violence situation going on that's still unclear. Deputies and investigators are talking to witnesses and the deputies involved in this incident to clarify the facts," Hoglund said.
