GARDEN GROVE, Calif. (KABC) -- An 18-year-old man was hospitalized in unknown condition after allegedly pointing a semi-automatic handgun at Garden Grove police Monday afternoon, prompting an officer-involved shooting.

Police responded to a call from an off-duty Santa Ana police officer who saw the armed suspect walking near Fredrick Drive and 9th Street with the handgun in his hand. The officer saw the suspect allegedly tuck it into his waistband.

A responding officer with the Garden Grove Police Department located the suspect near Chapman Avenue and Jacalene Lane at 4:10 p.m., and that's when the suspect allegedly pointed the weapon at the officer and an officer-involved shooting occurred.

The suspect was transported to UC Irvine Medical Center in unknown condition. He was alive at the time of transport, police said.

It's unknown if the suspect fired a shot at the officer.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office has been called to handle the investigation, which is routine protocol following officer-involved shootings.

Anyone with further information was asked to contact Garden Grove police.
