APPLE VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A woman walking on Highway 18 in Apple Valley was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver on Monday.

San Bernardino sheriff's deputies reported the incident at about 6 a.m. The woman was walking on the freeway west of Apple Valley Road.

The eastbound portion of the freeway from Stoddard Wells Road to Apple Valley Road was shut down for several hours for the investigation, San Bernardino sheriff's deputies said.

It was unknown when the freeway would open.

A suspect description was not immediately available.
