CA wants EPA to curb greenhouse gases

January 23, 2008 12:00:00 AM PST
California opens a new front in the legal battle to cut car emissions. Our state is one of 17 that sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency demanding that it take steps to curb greenhouse gas pollution immediately. They want the agency to act on last April's Supreme Court ruling that it has the authority to regulate emissions from cars and trucks.

California's request for a waiver to allow the state to impose its own vehicle emission laws was denied.

Court documents released Wednesday show EPA staff told the administrator California has compelling conditions to justify a waiver, but he denied it.
