Excess worry over precancerous lesions

February 13, 2008 12:00:00 AM PST
A new study reveals women diagnosed with precancerous breast lesions worry unnecessarily about developing invasive breast cancer. That's a problem experts worry may cause them to over treat their condition.

Experts studied 500 women diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ. They found 28 percent of the women believed they had a moderate or greater chance those lesions would spread.

But in fact, just one percent of DCIS cases actually metastasize. DCIS involves abnormal cells in the lining of the breast duct.
