Blue Cross halts 'tattle' letters to docs

February 13, 2008 12:00:00 AM PST
After widespread criticism, Blue Cross of California has abruptly dropped its practice of sending letters to doctors asking them to tattle on their own patients.California's largest for-profit health insurer had been sending out letters requesting that doctors disclose their patients' pre-existing conditions. Those patients then faced the prospect of having their medical coverage dropped.

The practice prompted outrage from doctors, patients, Governor Schwarzenegger and even presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Blue Cross now says it is dropping the practice because it is no longer necessary and was causing undue concern.
